Im the first to admit that there are plenty of grammar rules tested on the SAT that you can get away with fudging in real life: if you use most rather than more when comparing only two things, theres a pretty good chance no ones going to call you on it. Likewise, if you use a collective noun (team, jury, agency, university, organization, etc.) with a plural verb or pronoun, its highly unlikely that anyone will care or probably even notice, for that matter. The College Boards insistence that collective nouns be considered immutably singular is one of its quirks. Not so for comma splices. In my experience, people who cant always recognize when a comma is being used to separate two complete sentences tend to demonstrate the same problem in their own writing. And usually that indicates a larger problem: they dont really know how to recognize a sentence. Now, call me stodgy and old fashioned, but I dont think its unreasonable to expect that high school students know what does and does not constitute a sentence by the time they graduate. Not be able to define it in grammatical terms or discourse about it at length, but simply to recognize when something is a complete, stand-alone statement. Why? Well, in practical terms, lets just say that youve probably been taking it more or less for granted that you dont have to work terribly hard to follow my argument here. Its pretty clear where the divisions between thoughts are. But what if I were to write like this? I dislike being the bearer of bad news but when people out there in the real world (employers) see writing (resumes and cover letters) that contains flagrant grammatical errors they wont be particularly eager to hire you, as a matter of fact they probably wont even be terribly eager to give you an interview. Surveys have shown that the number one skill employers think is missing from their new hires is: the ability to write well, this is particularly true for people with degrees in fields like business. If youre lucky enough to get hired by company and cant even write memos clearly youre not going to win yourself any points, youre also definitely not going to be first in line for a promotion. Ok, so I threw in a few extra mistakes, but I think Ive made my point. Reading writing that contains a lot of comma splices requires effort its certainly comprehensible, but its also tiring and annoying to have to constantly figure out where one thought stops and the next starts. In the end, it has nothing to do with having to write about The Great Gatsby or The Declaration of Independence, and everything to do with making yourself understood.

Ultimately, she chooses to fulfill societal expectations, and, through her marriage, she molds herself into an â€Å"angel of the house.† However, her philanthropy ultimately goes against her values of freedom and independence, leaving her unsatisfied. From the early descriptions of Isabel’s character, we see that she is deeply concerned with her own virtue. In one of the first lengthy descriptions of her character, the narrator describes her as â€Å"stoutly determined not to be hollow† (65). Isabel’s determination manifests in a constant self-evaluation. Isabel prays earnestly for deliverance from dwelling her thoughts on vulgarity (65). And she worries whether she is an â€Å"egoist.† She is â€Å"always planning out her development, desiring her perfection, observing her progress† (65). Isabel’s determinate nature may make her unique, but her questions about virtue are not out of line for her time period. And some answered this question by focusing on women’s moral roles . Victorian essayist Sarah Stickney Ellis claims that a woman’s main priority in life should not be wealth or education, but â€Å"disinterested kindness† (1722). Men, she argues, should focus on â€Å"worldly aggrandizement.† Ellis describes how a man is thrust into the corrupt working world, and his wife’s responsibility is to stay home and be the moral center of the household. She writes of a tired husband, he has thought of the humble monitress who sat alone, guarding the fireside comforts of his distant home; and the remembrance of her character, clothed in moral beauty, has scattered the clouds before his mental vision, and sent him back to that beloved home, a better and wiser man† (1722). The answer to the woman question, for Ellis and others, is that women concern themselves with their moral character, rather than education, wealth, or independence. Thus, Isabel, in her concerns with virtue, may seem to fall in line with an ideal Victorian woman. However, we also see early on in the text that one of Isabel’s highest values is independence. Rather than wanting to find a husband, Isabel wants to focus on personal freedom and well-being. It is said about her: Something pure and proud that was in her. . . had hitherto kept her from any great vanity of conjecture on the article of possible husbands. Few of the men she saw seemed worth a ruinous expenditure, and it made her smile to think that one of them should present himself as an incentive to hope and a reward of patience. (65) Not only does Isabel value the â€Å"pure and proud† desire for independence within herself, but she even considers it â€Å"vanity† to focus on the possibility of a husband. The men she knows do not seem â€Å"worth a ruinous expenditure.† She would rather focus on her own self-improvement. She â€Å"always returned to her theory that a young woman whom after all every one thought clever should begin by getting a general impression of life† (66). This â€Å"impression† comes with independence the ability to be on your own, travel, and learn about the world. Isabel does value morality, but she also has a strong desire to be a learned and independent person. Holding both morality and independence highly, however, sets Isabel up to be self-divided in a Victorian society. Victorian notions of women’s morality are always within a marriage. Ellis claims that a woman holds the â€Å"high holy duty of cherishing in protecting the minor morals of life† (1722). But this duty only manifests itself in marriage. A woman becomes the beacon of character for her husband and her children, not for a larger realm of society. Isabel, wanting desperately to be good but also wanting to be independent, feels she must choose between these two values. Isabel is given on opportunity to be independent, at least financially, through her cousin Ralph. However, in this position of power, she feels incredibly uncomfortable and undeserving. Isabel presses her cousin Ralph on why his father gives her his money (not knowing that it was Ralph’s decision to give it to her). Ralph remarks that it was father’s generous gift to her, just for â€Å"beautifully existing† (227). But Isabel persists that she is undeserving of such a gift. â€Å"He liked me too much,† she responds (227). A paradox in her value system, Isabel cannot accept the generosity of others. But she feels like she has to be generous to other people. Victorian women are taught that they must be givers, rather than receivers. They must be the generous ones. As a receiver, Isabel feels useless. Her new-found wealth is not a gift but a burden she must bear. She believes that the more she has, the more she has to give away in order to feel satisfied. Ral ph sees the money as a chance for Isabel to be independent, but Isabel sees it as a burden she must give away. Isabel cannot see independence as being part of the moral good. In Victorian times, independence in women was thought of as uncouth and even frightening. Critics Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar describe the Victorian notions of independence in their feminist criticism The Madwoman in the Attic. The â€Å"angel in the house† mentality is an idea â€Å"imposed† on 19th century women. But this imposed angel has a â€Å"necessary opposite and double, the ‘monster’ in the house† (17). The independent woman, Gilbert and Gubar argue, is thought of as a â€Å"monster† in society. The necessary solution for the independent woman is to â€Å"kill† the angel image. They argue that for a woman, â€Å"it is the surrender of herself†¦that is the beautiful angel-woman’s key act, while it is precisely the sacrifice that dooms her both to death and to heaven. For to be selfless and noble is to be dead. A life like that has no story.† T hese critics argue that an angelic life is no life at all. Killing the angel in the house, according to Gilbert and Gubar, is the only option for the independent woman. But Isabel does not want this death. To become independent and kill the angel would be to go against her values of morality. She does not want to be a â€Å"monster† with no use and no contributions to society. While Isabel does wish for independence, there is no room for her in society to be both independent and good. So a marriage to someone that needs her becomes Isabel’s solution. Rather than kill the angel, Isabel will seek to embody it. Isabel’s wealth does puts her in a position to be generous. She now has the power to do good in the world. If she can give money to a man who needs it, perhaps someone with a family, Isabel can feel she is making a difference. Gilbert Osmond is presented as the perfect person to whom Isabel can give. He lacks the prestige and appeal that Isabel’s other suitors have, but strangely, this is what draws him to her. Madame Merle describes him as a man with â€Å"no career, no name, no position, no fortune, no past, no future, no anything† (203). While her description is deprecating and extreme, it is true that Osmond is without a fortune. Other characters look down on him for his lack of wealth. But the fact that he does not have much money actually attracts Isabel. Osmond is missing something that Isabel feels she can provide. Her other suitors are well off financially and do not need her, and Isabel wants to go where she feels she is needed. In a marriage to other s uitors such as Warberton or Goodwood, Isabel would feel useless; in a marriage to Osmond, she can feel useful. Osmond also has a daughter, Pansy, who needs support, both financially and also maternally. In a marriage to Osmond, Isabel could help Pansy. Isabel could ensure that Pansy is financially supported, but she can also be a female role and maternal figure to her. She sees Pansy as an innocent girl that she can shape: â€Å"Pansy was really a blank page, a pure white surface, successfully kept so† (315). Pansy is, in a sense, a blank canvas, someone who needs to be affected. Isabel can help mold Pansy and give her a successful life. Isabel knows that her money could open up more marriage prospects for Pansy. She wants to give her plenty of opportunities. Earlier in the text, Ralph says about Isabel, â€Å"She’s as good as her best opportunities† (192). Isabel does believe this, but not for herself. She believes it about Pansy. Isabel’s wealth can serve as fuel for better opportunities. Isabel’s marriage could not only give Pansy more opportunities, but it could protect her from becoming a victim. Pansy is described as vulnerable, someone who needs care and protection. It is said about her, â€Å"To be so tender was to be touching withal, and she could be felt as an easy victim of fate† (315). Isabel wants to protect Pansy from being made a victim. She does not want Pansy to be taken advantage of, and in a sense, money can protect her from that. If she marries Pansy’s father, Isabel can protect Pansy and add to her prospects. And Isabel can add to her personal feelings of validation and fulfillment. Isabel can thus serve as a benefactor to Osmond and his daughter. The nature of her relationship with Osmond is drawn out in a conversation Isabel has with Mrs. Touchett. Critical of Osmond, Mrs. Touchett says something similar to what Madame Merle said earlier: â€Å"He has no money; he has no name; he has no importance† (333). Mrs. Touchett does not see Osmond as a viable suitor for Isabel because lacks wealth and prestige. But Isabel sees all of these â€Å"no’s† as an opportunity for giving. She says, â€Å"I think I value everything that’s valuable. I care very much for money, and that’s why I wish Mr. Osmond to have a little† (333). Marriage is an opportunity for Isabel to make good use of the money Ralph has given her. Mrs. Touchett responds to Isabel, â€Å"Give it to him then; but marry someone else† (333). Isabel, however, cannot separate marriage and giving; they are one in the same to her. Mrs. Touchett goes so far to ask Isabel if her relationship with Osmond is based on pity: â€Å"Do you marry him out of charity?† (333). Isabel dodges this question: â€Å"It was my duty to tell you, Aunt Lydia, but I don’t think it’s my duty to explain it to you† (333). The fact that she does not answer the question shows that she is avoiding the truth. She is marrying Osmond for charity but does not want to admit it. Isabel knows that others would look down on her if she admits to this kind of charity. They will see her marriage as nothing but a financial agreement that provides no benefit to Isabel. Mrs. Touchett does tell her, â€Å"In your partnership, you’ll bring everything† (333). But Isabel does not see this as a problem; that is precisely what she wants. Isabel only feels satisfied if she is being of use to others. And in her marriage, Isabel feels she is serving the good and helping others, even if it is at a cost to herself. Isabel uses these justifications while she is deciding to marry Osmond. But she also uses them on the back-end, when she reflects on why she married him and why she chooses to stay. Even into her marriage, Isabel continues to see Osmond as needing her help. It is said of Isabel, â€Å"She would launch his boat for him; she would be his providence† (423). Isabel sees Osmond as a passive object without agency, someone who needs his boat launched. She can be his â€Å"providence† all throughout her marriage. And the primary means of this providence is through her financial support. She had always thought of her money as â€Å"a burden,† and she â€Å"was filled with the desire to transfer the weight of it to some other conscience, to some more prepared receptacle† (423). And that someone is Osmond, a person who needs it and a man who can actually use it. The language describing Osmond as a passive object or â€Å"receptacle† continues when he is called a â€Å"charitable institution† in Isabel’s mind (423). He is literally an institution to whom she can contribute. And the â€Å"transfer† of theâ€Å"weight† of her money to this â€Å"institution† effectually â€Å"lighten(s) her own conscience (423). Osmond’s marriage relieves Isabel of the burden of her wealthy position, and it fulfills her desire to be useful. Isabel stays with Osmond because she believes she has done good in marrying him. Isabel even equates the good with love. She believes, â€Å"It would be a good thing to love him† (423). On the other end of marriage, Isabel still sees love as a selfless act. She still refuses to describe it in terms of feeling or affection. It is said of her, â€Å"And she had loved him, she had so anxiously and yet so ardently given herselfa good deal for what she found in him, but a good deal also for what she brought him and what might enrich the gift† (423). Isabel sees giving herself away as the same thing as love. She does not seek any mutuality in love, only to give of herself generously. And a â€Å"good deal† of why she marries Osmond is for â€Å"what she brought him,† not what he could give to her. Isabel seeks out the opposite of what many people would look for in a marriage. She ignores what Osmond could do for her and solely focuses on how she can benefit him and Pansy. She seeks always to be a benefactor. Some may read Isabel’s philanthropic marriage as weak. She is not strong enough to kill the angel image and become independent. But this is not how Isabel views it. In her position as a benefactor, she is actually the more powerful player. She is the one with money, and Osmond is in debt to her. She has brought everything to the marriage, and in her giving, she holds some power over Osmond. In Coventry Patmore’s poem â€Å"The Angel in the House,† from where Gilbert and Gubar take their criticism, he describes women as the â€Å"best half of creation’s best† (19). Gilbert and Gubar interpret this poem as caging women inside the home. But if women are the â€Å"better half† and are solely responsible for morality in marriage, they do hold some power. There are number of people who get injuries in the skin or in the soul, and then results for those who survive after the dea ths of their families and friends (Medicinenet, n.d.). This approach mainly encourages the policy makers to deal with the terrorism in the appropriate manner and not as a hypothetical situation. It mainly provides the policy makers as a useful model which helps them in dealing with the terrorism in a comprehensive manner. It also ensures policies which restrict future attacks and in case they occur than then respond them in proper manner (Price, 2017). This paper defines the way through which International Law treat the terrorism and diseases in different manner. It further states the possibility to imagine them as interchangeable, and also apply similar legal tools towards their combatting. This report is divided into three arguments, first argument states different treatments conducted by international law for terrorism and diseases? Second argument deals with the fact whether there is any similarity between international law and diseases, or there is any possibility to use these terms interchangeably? This paper state the alternative framework which theorizes the threat related to the terrorism on the basis of epidemiological approach which considers it as a chronic disease like cancer instead of a military, ideological, or socio-economic problem. Last and third argument states whether it is possible to use similar tools for dealing with the terrorism and diseases in context of international law? After highlighting the similarities in the terrorism and diseases, it present a staging system and tools which can be used by the policy makers for the purpose of educating the public in this regard and allocate counterterrorism resources in more efficient manner. Lastly, paper is concluded with brief conclusion. Terrorism is not considered as new phenomenon, during the period of second half of the twentieth century, there are number of countries in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia challenge movements of different kinds which include violence against the innocent civilians for the purpose of achieving their goals. For the purpose of responding these movements, international community adopts series of treaties which deals with particular types of issues and terrorist acts. These treaties also impose obligations on states to take action against such acts. Presently, almost 13 international treaties are adopted by the international community against the terrorism, as well as there are number of regional treaties also. It must be noted that, process of drafting a general treaty against international terrorism is almost complete. Different conflicts around the world have been described as part of a war on terrorism (Donnell, 2006). These treaties deals with almost 50 type of offences which include 10 crimes against civil aviation, 16 crimes against shipping or continental platforms, 12 crimes against the person, 7 crimes involving the use, possession or threatened use of bombs or nuclear materials, and 2 crimes related to the financing of terrorism. These treaties are considered as established code against the terrorist offences. The most reliable evidence of this fact is the 1999 Convention against the financing of terrorism, which deals with the crime of donating or collecting funds (yamei, 2017). These treaties also define the duties of state parties in context of crime related to the financing the activities related to the terrorism, and thee activities are defined in the treaties listed in the annex is independent of their ratification of them. These treaties also allowed the states parties which are not even the parties of the treaties for making reservations by limiting the scope of their obligations und er 1999 convention in context to the financing of the activities prohibited by any non- ratified treaty or treaties. In 2002, organization of American States adopted a second treaty against the terrorism which uses similar approach. The inter-American convention is considered as series of obligations imposed on the state parties in context of crimes defined in ten treaties. The 1999 convention in context of financing of terrorism and other 9 international treaties listed in the annex. The 1977 European Convention for the Suppression of Terrorism which is amended by the Protocol of 2003 also adopts same approach. This treaty also establishes the series of obligations related to the acts of terrorism which are defined in other 10 international treaties. This idea is also supported by the UN Security Council Resolution 1566 that crimes stated in the existing international treaties form part of a code of terrorist offences (Security council, n.d.). After considering the above facts, it can be said that not only terrorist offences but other acts also which adopt similar approach are covered under the code established by the international community. All these facts stated the way through which terrorist activities are treated by international community (UNODC, 2009). On the other hand, two main aims of our national public health agenda are to increase the quality and number of years of healthy life, and also to eliminate the health disparities. In case of chronic diseases, these goals facilitates a comprehensive strategy which mainly includes interventions for prevention and control of categorical diseases and their risk factors, changes occurred in behavior of individual, environmental change, improvements in clinical and preventive services, and organizational change. It mainly promotes the patient compliance and health providers by establishing best practices in all the persons, and they not consider the racial/ethnic background, sex, geographic determinants, or socioeconomic status of the person. These interventions can be accomplished through different mechanisms which include health education, development and use of information systems, and development and implementation of policies and guidelines. Policies related to this are implemented as regulations, ordinances, and other laws and as organizational practices (Magnusson, 2010). It must be noted that achievement of these predominant national objectives requires strengthening of the infrastructure in context of public health and also the development of adequate capacity for the purpose of undertaking the core public health functions of assessment, development of policy, and assurance. In all these areas, international law play very important role. This can be understood thr ough example, identifying and strengthen the important factors of the public health infrastructure such as development of health workforce which is diverse and competent, information and communication system, and health department surveillance and laboratory capacities. All these facts are considered as important factors of proper legislation. It must be noted that legislations play very important role by helping the state and local governments with the power to encourage or influence the health care providers, associated health professionals, and those business organizations which promote and protect the health of the public in order to increase the quality and number of years of healthy life. These laws play most important role in the elimination of disparities for the purpose of accessing and delivering quality health care. Additionally, appropriate laws take help from the local public health agencies for the purpose of assessing the burden of chronic diseases and to deal with th ese diseases (Mensah, Goodman, Zaza, Moulton,2004). War related to cancer is almost similar to the war related to the terrorism; because both the wars are difficult and it is possible to apply lessons learn from one war on other. In political context cancer is considered as socioeconomic disease which mainly affects the poorest people. And in similar way terrorism find a home in those nations which are not developed. Possibly, improvement in global economic well-being will help. It is necessary to detect the cancer at early stage, because it is an agreeable fact that local treatment of this this disease is effective at that time also when there is no advanced treatment of this disease. Pap smear play important role in reducing the cervical cancer mortality and, more recently, the effectiveness of prostate specific antigen screening in reducing prostate cancer mortality are cases in point. In case of war on terrorism, investment at global level in intelligence gathering and dissemination will be needed for early detection of activated cells and infiltrated nodes (National Intelligence Council, 2000). Some other similarities are also there, because there is need to make sustained and considerable investment before the first signs of progress appear. After conducting number of research and spending billions of dollars there is reduction in the rate of mortality from common solid tumors of adulthood like lung and breast cancer. On the other side, terrorism can also be prevented from with this similar approach, which means it is necessary to apply treatment before the first signs of progress appear. For both the approaches, experts stated that these wars can only be won by making investment in the specific area such as etiology, causation, prevention, screening, early detection, focusing on a particular target, make efforts to destroy this issue with little associated damage, and implementing regulations and protocols for resolving these issues. In actual, it is necessary to take strict action in both the cases becau se any point of leverage will turn into a big problem. But, it is possible to win both the wars by ensuring talent and commitment of the people involved, as well as the political will to see each challenge to its end. After considering the above facts, it can be said that there are lot of similarity between these two, as stated Cancer is to the patient and their family what terrorism is to a free society. Therefore, it is necessary to overcome from this threat (Curt, n.d.). It must be noted that not only terrorism behave like chronic disease, but there are many other challenges such as preventing and treating cancer are exactly same to those associated with the terrorism. Scholars of terrorism stated different analysis of the international law framework under which similar tools can be used for treating these two issues such as comprehensive analysis of rule of law framework applied on counter-terrorism response such as human rights approach at international level, humanitarian, criminal, and refugee/asylum law and it also includes strengths, lacunae, pressure points, and interrelationship between its legal principles. In similar manner these approaches can also applied to won war of cancer. Another tool is determining the pressure between the causes and preventions used to overcome with these causes. In similar manner, it is necessary to evaluate the pressure between the security imperative and complying with the rule of law that are related to the gov ernmental and institutional policies and practices. Really multinational, multidisciplinary coverage related to the global expertise from legal practitioner, judicial, policy-making, military, policing, civil society, academic and institutional experience. In similar manner, in context of cancer it is necessary to ensure global expertise for preventing this disease which includes medical practitioners, experts, institutions, etc (Norman, 2017). It is necessary to implement the recommendations made by experts and international forums in both contexts for the purpose of ensuring best practices in both (Oxford university press, n.d.). It must be noted that international community use the similar tools to deal with the cancer and terrorism, because there are number of people who use the diseases as terrorist weapons for the purpose of destroying societies. This can be understood through example, in the early period of 1990, disclosures related to the Soviet Union's and Iraq's biological weapons programs caused many experts to focus on explosion of the biological weapons in the community at international level. At the time when intelligence department of US suspected that the Soviet Union and Iraq had developed biological weapons, but they are not able to estimate the huge scale and sophistication of the Soviet and Iraqi programs. Different evidences related to the Soviet and Iraqi bioweapon increase the fears that explosion of biological weapons had become big issue at international level. Various experts show concern that possession of biological weapons by rogue states as big issue, but also state that exploration of biological weapons make the things easier for terrorists to gain access to pathogenic microbes (Zwaagastra, 2016). These fears results in the establishment of protocol related to the Biological Weapons Convention of 1972 ("BWC") in the first half of the 1990. This protocol results in verification mechanism in context of BWC's prohibition on the deve lopment, production, and stockpiling of biological weapons. Adding momentum to this effort completed the Chemical Weapons Convention in 1993, which also contained verification mechanism for the purpose of improving the compliance with the Convention's prohibitions. Another attack in context of disclosure on biological weapons and bioterrorism-proposals is the anthrax attacks, and in this development, production, or possession of a biological weapon by any individual or state is considered as crime at international level, and this crime is punishable by applying universal jurisdiction. Above stated facts clearly stated that these conventions restrict both terrorism and diseases at the same time. Therefore, it is possible for the international community to use same tools to deal with both diseases and terrorism. The Sussex program initiated by Harvard related to the Chemical and Biological Warfare Armament and Arms Limitation created this idea in this proposed convention on the Preven tion and Punishment of the Crime of Developing, Producing, Acquiring, Stockpiling, Retaining, Transferring or Using Biological or Chemical Weapons. It must be noted that, making the use, development, or possession of a biological weapon a crime under international law in context of principle related to the universal jurisdiction result in increased enemies of human kind (Fidler, 2000). Conclusion: After considering these facts, it can be said that terrorism and diseases are similar because both leave same kind of impact on the society and family of the victim. As stated, various activities related to the terrorism conducted in the world are considered as terrible way to remember that terrorism is also an medical issue, because whenever something like this happen we are forced to think about deaths. Various people who get injuries in the skin or in the soul either because of terrorism or because of disease suffer a lot and then consequences for those who survive after the deaths of their families and friends. Currently, both the issues are treated differently by international law but various evidences present which shows that these issues are similar in nature and for dealing with these issues, international law can use similar approach and tools.
